Needed efficient public transport

The sharp rise in the number of cars is partly due to the absence of an efficient, reliable public transport system. To ease traffic chaos and restore order on Indian roads, the government will have to improve public transport. Funds are a problem. Apart from collecting road tax and a cess on petrol, the government now proposes to increase the registration charges for cars and two-wheelers to finance the expansion of public transport. Ideally, green taxes should be levied based on the principle: Let the polluter pay and the bigger the polluter, the higher the tax. Besides, separate lanes should be set up to encourage cycling and walking.
